Dirty Needles Found in Dumpster [KEYETV]

A Cedar Park resident called the police department Monday after noticing that hundreds of dirty needles had been dumped in a dumpster at a local shopping center.

From KEYETV.com:
"Lisa Saxton found bags filled with used and new needles, some containing blood, inside a construction dumpster at the Super Target near FM 1431 and Hwy 183."

Now Open at 1890 Ranch: Bealls and Academy Sports + Outdoors

Two retail stores opened at the 1890 Ranch shopping center in Cedar Park this past month.

Bealls
Clothes, Accessories, Shoes, and Cosmetics

Bealls opened at the southwest corner of the Target building. Bealls is a Texas-based chain operated by Stage Stores, Inc.

According to their website, the company's specialty is "bringing nationally-known, brand name apparel, accessories, footwear and cosmetics to small towns and communities throughout the U.S."

Staff members seemed like they were still getting used to the store on the particular day I visited, but they may be ready to roll now. If you're in need of a quick purchase of clothes or accessories, this could be a nice alternative to some of the stores at Lakeline Mall. I haven't bought anything here yet, but since it's so close, I'll check again soon.

Academy Sports + Outdoors
Sporting goods, equipment, clothes, and shoes

Academy is one of the nation’s largest sporting goods retailers, offering everything from camping, fishing, golf, and hunting gear to athletic shoes, play sets, and BBQ grills.

This store is to outdoor enthusiasts what Home Depot is to home improvement folks. My eyes almost started to glaze over as I walked up and down the aisles, and it took all my will power not to buy more than what I went in for.

If you haven't been to these stores yet, check them out. And if you have, let us know what you think in the comments.

Local Moms Stroll on Kid-Friendly Workout

Stroller Strides and Shape Rattle and StrollWhen my daughter was month or two old, I was ready to get back in shape and wanted to connect with other moms in my area. I had read about an exercise program where I could bring my daughter along. I decided to try it out and signed up for a class called Stroller Strides.

Three times a week, my daughter and I met other moms and infants at a local park and worked out with an instructor. It was great exercise, I made some new friends, and it was a great start to my day.

There are two such programs in the Cedar Park area. One of them is run by Cedar Park resident, Phoebe Reed, for Stroller Strides. The other, featured in this week's Impact News, is called Shape, Rattle, and Stroll, and is owned and operated by Cedar Park resident Meghan Dixon.

If you or someone you know is a new mom looking for an opportunity to meet new people and get a great workout, check these two out.

Schools Open Monday; Ike Evacuees Moved to Rouse High

Leander ISD reports that all of its schools will be open for classes on Monday, Sept. 15th, with school beginning and ending at the regular times for all grade levels.

As of Sunday evening, the number of evacuees remaining at the district's shelter locations had decreased enough that all evacuees could be housed at a single site – Rouse High School.

From LISD:
"Approximately 400 evacuees – most from Galveston and other areas where returning to their homes is still not an option – were led to the new shelter and welcomed with water and snacks.

Rouse High School was selected by the emergency management team due to the setup of the building – allowing continuing separation of sheltered guests and students. This selection allows for minimal disruption to teaching and learning, in case sheltering activities continue over several school days.

The shelter at Rouse High School will be managed by other LISD administrators, so that RHS’ administrators, teachers and staff may devote their full attention to their students and to the operations of their school."

Evacuees Wait Out the Storm in Local Schools

Evacuees are starting to settle into shelters in area schools. From KLBJ:
The county’s Connie Watson says, there are now 1600 evacuees-mostly from Galveston. "Right now emergency management offices are helping out the shelters with any needs that they may have. The six shelters that we have opened are Canyon Vista, Deer Park, and Grisham Middle Schools, Mc Neil High School, Cedar Park High School, and Cedar Park Middle School.” The spokeswoman said.

Traveling This Weekend? Keep an Eye On Ike

If you're planning to leave Cedar Park this weekend, remember that traffic on roads throughout Central Texas may be heavier due to evacuations. Ike might also affect airline schedules into and out of ABIA, as well as many connecting flights through other Texas cities.

Southwest has said it will suspend flights this weekend at Corpus Christi, Harlington, and Houston Hobby airports. The company also recommends checking the status of your flight if traveling through Austin or San Antonio as conditions may change.

LISD Schools Shelter Evacuees; School Still On with Early Dismissal Friday

AS OF THURS 9/11, 6:30 PM: SCHOOLS OPEN FRIDAY; STUDENTS WILL BE RELEASED 2 HOURS EARLY

Latest message from LISD:
"LISD to have School on Friday, Sept. 12th
All Leander ISD schools will be open and educating students on Friday, Sept. 12, 2008. School will begin at the regular times at all grade levels.

Like other Austin-area districts, Leander ISD is anticipating heavy traffic on major roadways in the afternoon, and will therefore be releasing our students two hours early. This will also allow people to prepare for any severe weather conditions that may occur locally due to the storm.

The State of Texas has decided that public secondary schools will be used as shelter sites in this and future evacuation situations. This creates the very real chance that school district administrators may be faced with sheltering situations annually, or even more often. Do we then close our schools in every one of these situations, or do we set up systems that allow us to show care, compassion and concern for our fellow Texans while still attending to our education mission?

Leander ISD is confident that we have systems in place that will allow us to conduct our regular teaching and learning activities with very little impact on our school day, while still doing right and good by those who need shelter from Hurricane Ike. We would not have school if we were not certain that we can do both of these things well."
Earlier today, LISD confirmed that 7 secondary schools will be used to shelter evacuees starting this evening, and the district will reschedule a number of events and activities originally planned for this weekend:
"Travis and Williamson County Emergency Management personnel confirmed this morning that seven Leander ISD secondary schools will be utilized as shelters for Hurricane Ike evacuees, beginning this evening (Thursday, Sept. 11, 2008).

Leander ISD's Emergency Management staff met again with these agencies Wednesday morning, and will continue to do so as Ike nears landfall. We in LISD held a training/communications session with principals and administrators on Tuesday to prepare for this eventuality. We are fully ready to work with the Red Cross and emergency management personnel to shelter an estimated 3,500 – 4,000 folks from the Texas coast. Dr. Champion's Webcast describes our sheltering activities.

Important notes:
1. Shelter sites — We will likely be hosting approximately 3,500 - 4,000 folks at seven LISD secondary campuses.

2. Volunteers — may only be LISD employees and/or Red Cross trained and approved volunteers. Others will be turned away.

3. Donations — no donations will be accepted at our schools (Red Cross rules) – this includes food. Donations should be taken to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or other organizations.

Starbucks Makes Teachers' Mondays Sweeter

I've already disclosed my love for Starbucks, so I thought I'd share this item for some of our local teachers headed back to school:

To help you kick-off the first few Mondays of the school year, Starbucks is offering a complimentary tall cup of brewed coffee to school teachers, grades K-12, each Monday in September.

I checked with the store on 1431 and they said any local teachers who want to stop by for their free coffee on Monday simply need to bring in their school ID.

The idea came from some of the feedback on the MyStarbucksIdea website - you can see the promo here.

Cedar Park Businesses in the Spotlight

A number of local companies have recently been recognized for their work. First, Cedar Park is the proud home to 3 companies on Inc. Magazine's 2008 Inc. 5000 list. The Inc 5000 list recognizes the fastest growing privately held companies in America.
You can see the top 50 Inc. 5000 companies in the Austin-Round Rock metro area on the magazine's website.

(By the way, congrats to our favorite baby retailer in Round Rock, BabyEarth, for a great rank on this list!)

Another shout out goes to Fallbrook Technologies, which was chosen as a 2008 Greater Austin Business Award Nominee in the Small Company Innovation Category. Fallbrook is a designer and manufacturer of the NuVinci transmission, a continuously variable planetary (CVP) transmission for bicycles and light electrical vehicles.

Congratulations to our leaders and innovators in Cedar Park!

Cedar Park Police Budget to Add Officers

A few weeks ago, I posted an article about Cedar Park considering its police to resident ratio.

Today, there's an item on the Statesman site about some of the proposed budget details that will get the city to its target staffing levels:
"Under the budget, which the City Council plans to hold hearings on tonight and Sept. 11, the 67-member department would add one detective, two corporals and four officers in the patrol division."
